Precept
The Buddhist code of conduct and morality. For the laity, the 5 precepts are:
- Not harming/killing living things,
- Not taking what is not given,
- No sexual misconduct,
- No lying or gossip,
- Not taking intoxicating substances eg drugs or drink.
During meditation retreats or Uuposatha Days (lunar observance), the laity will observe 8 to 10 precepts. They are;
- Not harming/killing living things,
- Not taking what is not given,
- No sexual misconduct (and in this case, no sex at all)
- No lying or gossip (during meditation retreats, this may be extended to include any speech outside of clarifications with their teachers)
- Not taking intoxicating substances eg drugs or drink
- Refraining from food consumption beyond noon
- Abstaining from singing, dancing and music
- Avoiding any personal adornments or enhancements such as makeup
- Not sleeping in an elevated or luxurious place
- Not accepting any money
