Precept

The Buddhist code of conduct and morality. For the laity, the 5 precepts are:

  1. Not harming/killing living things,
  2. Not taking what is not given,
  3. No sexual misconduct,
  4. No lying or gossip,
  5. Not taking intoxicating substances eg drugs or drink.

During meditation retreats or Uuposatha Days (lunar observance), the laity will observe 8 to 10 precepts. They are;

  1. Not harming/killing living things,
  2. Not taking what is not given,
  3. No sexual misconduct (and in this case, no sex at all)
  4. No lying or gossip (during meditation retreats, this may be extended to include any speech outside of clarifications with their teachers)
  5. Not taking intoxicating substances eg drugs or drink
  6. Refraining from food consumption beyond noon
  7. Abstaining from singing, dancing and music
  8. Avoiding any personal adornments or enhancements such as makeup
  9. Not sleeping in an elevated or luxurious place
  10. Not accepting any money
