Khontan

Refers to the Ghandarvas; demi-gods who serve as heavenly musicians in Mahayana Buddhist mythology. They are subjects of the Dhrtrarastra of the 4 Heavenly Kings. They are also one of the 8 divisions of Buddhist protectors.

Ghandarvas are known to consume smells as sustenance. They often dwell in the wilderness, drawn there by the abundance of fragrant sap, bark and flowers. They demand a steady supply of offerings and sometimes cause troubles for travellers passing through their domain, e.g. monks on Tudong journeys.
